Google AI Mode and AI Overviews in Switzerland: what you need to know

In short

Google's AI Mode has been available in Switzerland since 8 October 2025, in German, French and Italian; AI Overviews since 26 March 2025. According to Google, no special optimisation is needed: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and no special files or markup are required.

Since when has AI Mode been available in Switzerland?

Since 8 October 2025. On that day, Google announced on its German-language blog that AI Mode was launching in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, in Switzerland in German, French and Italian. In its global announcement of 7 October 2025, Google said AI Mode was coming to more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories.

AI Overviews came earlier. Google launched them in Switzerland on 26 March 2025, in German, French, Italian and English. At launch, according to Google’s blog, they were shown only to signed-in users aged 18 and over. On 6 October 2026, Google’s help centre says AI Overviews are available to all users in the listed countries, which include Switzerland.

Correction to older pages: some Swiss guides still say AI Mode is not enabled in Switzerland, and a trade news headline of August 2025 said Switzerland was left out. That was true until 8 October 2025. It has been out of date since.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are a short summary above the normal search results; AI Mode is a separate search area for longer questions with follow-ups. On Search Central, Google describes AI Mode as particularly helpful for questions that need reasoning or complex comparisons. AI Overviews, by contrast, appear only when Google’s systems judge them to add something to classic search, and Google says they often don’t trigger.

Both use what Google calls query fan-out: the AI runs several related searches on subtopics for one question. Google says the two features may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links vary. A company that appears in AI Overviews does not automatically appear in AI Mode.

Google gives usage figures only worldwide: on 3 June 2026 it reported over 2.5 billion monthly active users of AI Overviews and over one billion monthly users of AI Mode. We found no figures for Switzerland from Google.

What changes for Swiss companies?

For Swiss companies, one thing changes above all: an answer now sits above the links, and it names only a few companies and links to a few pages.

  • Less room for names. A company missing from the answer is hardly seen for that search, even if its own page ranks further down. On Search Central, Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are of higher quality, because users are more likely to spend more time on the site. As far as we could see, Google has published no click figures for Switzerland.
  • Three national languages. In Switzerland, AI Mode answers in German, French and Italian. Companies with customers in Romandy or Ticino need content in those languages so that the AI finds suitable sources there.
  • More sources per answer. Because of query fan-out, Google says it can show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic web search. Your pages should therefore answer the sub-questions your customers have, not only the main question.
  • Local details count. According to Google’s guide of July 2026, AI answers can include information about local businesses and products. For this, Google points to Business Profiles and, for shops, Merchant Center.

How does your company appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews?

With the same foundations as in normal Google Search. On Search Central (last updated 10 December 2025), Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. In practice:

  1. Indexed and snippet-eligible: a page must be in Google’s index and allowed to show with a snippet. Setting ‘nosnippet’ excludes it as a link.
  2. Crawlable: neither robots.txt nor a CDN or host may block Googlebot.
  3. Included in Search Console: since 31 August 2026, a website can be excluded from the AI features in Search Console. It is included by default. Check the setting under Settings, ‘Search generative AI’.
  4. Original, expert content: in its guide of 10 July 2026, Google recommends content that goes beyond common knowledge, is clearly structured and is supported by good images and video.
  5. Clean business data: a complete Business Profile and, for shops, product data in Merchant Center.

None of this is a guarantee. Google itself says a page that meets every requirement may still not be crawled, indexed or shown.

What does Google explicitly not require?

In its guide of 10 July 2026, Google lists tactics you can ignore for Google Search:

  • llms.txt and other AI text files: new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown are not needed, because Google Search itself does not use them.
  • Chunking content into tiny pieces: according to the guide, Google’s systems understand several topics on one page.
  • Rewriting for AI: no special writing style is needed.
  • Creating inauthentic mentions: Google says this is less helpful than it might seem; its spam systems block such attempts.
  • Structured data as a lever: not required for the AI features, and there is no special schema.org markup. It remains useful for rich results.

In the same guide, Google warns against tools that promise ranking success or claim to use ‘internal’ Google metrics: no third-party tool has access to Google’s ranking or AI systems. All of these statements apply to Google. ChatGPT and Claude use their own search systems, and the statements do not automatically apply there.

How do you measure whether you appear in AI Mode?

With two sources: Search Console for impressions, and repeated questions for what the answers actually say.

Search Console. The generative AI performance report has been available to all websites since 31 August 2026. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Google counts clicks from these features in the normal performance report, as part of overall search traffic. According to Google’s help centre, sites with too few impressions may not see the report.

The answers themselves. Search Console does not show whether you are named, recommended or only linked, or how the answer describes your company. For that, you ask your customers’ questions repeatedly, on several days, and count. A single answer is not a result, because the same question does not always get the same answer; the article What is AI visibility? explains why.

anewera measures Google AI Overviews continuously with a Swiss location, with several answers per question and day and with a margin of error. We add AI Mode on request. How we measure is on the method page, and we show it openly on our own brand in the live case study ‘Grow in Public’. Where your company stands today is what the AI visibility audit measures, and what such measurement costs in Switzerland is covered in What does GEO cost in Switzerland?.

What we could not verify

On 6 October 2026, we could not confirm these points on Google’s own pages:

  • Usage: how often Google shows AI Overviews in Switzerland, and how many people here use AI Mode.
  • Access: since when AI Overviews in Switzerland have also appeared for signed-out users and for people under 18.
  • Other languages: Google’s help centre lists Romansh and English among the languages for AI Mode, but not per country. Whether AI Mode answers in those languages in Switzerland is therefore not confirmed.
  • Clicks: how clicks to Swiss websites have changed since the launch.

As soon as Google publishes anything on these points, we will add it here with a date. Please report errors through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Mode available in Switzerland?

Yes. Google launched AI Mode in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 8 October 2025, in Switzerland in German, French and Italian. On 6 October 2026, Google's help centre still lists Switzerland among the countries where AI Mode is available. Pages that say otherwise are out of date.

How do you open Google AI Mode?

According to Google's help centre, in three ways: at google.com/ai, on google.com by typing a question and tapping AI Mode, or in the Google app by tapping AI Mode on the home screen (as of 6 October 2026).

Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI Mode?

No. In its guide of July 2026, Google says you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its AI features, and names llms.txt as an example of a tactic you can ignore for Google Search. This does not automatically apply to ChatGPT, Claude or other services.

Can I exclude my website from AI Mode?

Yes. Since 31 August 2026, Google Search Console has offered every website a setting that excludes its links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and the generative AI features in Discover. Every website is included by default. According to Google, a change generally takes a few days to take effect.

Can I see in Search Console whether my pages appear in AI Mode?

Partly. Since 31 August 2026, the generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It counts impressions. It does not show whether an answer names your company, recommends it or describes it correctly; for that, the answers themselves have to be read.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are a summary above the normal search results that Google shows only for some searches. AI Mode is a separate area for longer questions and follow-ups, with a fuller answer and links. Google says the two may use different models, so the answers and the linked pages differ.
